Background Application:
Correlation of Sabe’s motorport/automotive CFD methodology against publicaly available wind tunnel data.
Our Experience:
Sabe Fluid Dynamics hassignificant experience delivering automotive and motorsport aerodynamics development, our work is predominantly confidential. We very rarely are allowed to disclose the name of our clients or the content of our work.
We decided to carry out an internal CFD to Wind Tunnel correlation study based on publicly available experimental data. Our objective is to publicly demonstrate Sabe’s CFD methodology capability in predicting the aerodynamic flow characteristics around road vehicles.
While we at Sabe have significant experience delivering automotive and motorsport aerodynamics development, our work is predominantly confidential.
The well-known DrivAer model was used as reference. The experiments were chosen based on the quality of the data available:
• Study by Heft et al. as a collaboration between the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Audi AG and BWM AG.
• Study by Hupertz et al. from Ford Motor Company.
The results suggest very good correlation for drag, with slightly larger differences for lift and balance, but all within acceptable ranges when considering the background levels of experimental repeatability seen across multiple wind tunnel facilities.
Comparisons of the surface and off-body pressure signature where also established, showing a good agreement between CFD and experiment.
Our experience designing and implementing CFD methodologies for high-performance applications, including Formula 1 teams, is far reaching. While we hope this document provides a glimpse into our capabilities, we will be very happy to discuss our approach in more details within the context of your application.
